Smart Home Opportunity is Just Beginning

Positioning to serve the intelligent home of the 21st century has quickly grown to become a focal point for service providers and a variety of participants spanning the utility, smart grid, building and ICT industries. A new report from Boston market research firm Strategy Analytics predicts 16% of broadband households globally will have at least one smart home system by 2017.

Wireless and broadband carriers, energy, and security service providers are all active in the smart home market. Strategy Analytics sees companies including ADT, AT&T, British Gas, Rogers Communications, SFR, Swisscom, Time Warner Cable and Verizon, as well as "remote-enabled entertainment controls and smart appliances from the likes of LG and Whirlpool," driving adoption of smart home equipment and services.

Interactive security services, integrated entertainment and home controls will be the major revenue generators, followed by self-monitoring systems and services," according Strategy Analytics.

U.S. service providers will have some catching up to do, if you believe Strategy Analytics. "Interactive security from Alarm.com and Comcast in addition to ADT will remain the leading application in the US market and entertainment-related solutions will be popular globally," the report states.

CHR Solutions believes our clients are well positioned to take advantage of this emerging trend. Location and focus matters, and smaller, rural service providers have an opportunity to capture their own market for these services. Strategy Analytics identified larger companies, whose focus will be on larger markets, leaving the smaller markets ripe for opportunity in our opinion.
