Software-defined networking (SDN) looks like it’s the right technology at the right time, "riding the wave of a 'perfect storm'," according to a new report from IDC, in which it projects that the worldwide SDN market for the enterprise and cloud service providers segments will increase 10-fold from 2013 to 2016, from $360 million to $3.7 billion.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is looking to develop an ultra-high bandwidth wireless equivalent to fiber optics. DARPA’s wishes have a knack for creating commercial applications, with the Internet itself being the best example of a DARPA project with civilian implications. This newest DARPA R&D program aims to develop “a fiber-equivalent communications backbone...to create a 100 Gb/s (gigabit per second) data link that achieves a range greater than 200 kilometers (120 miles) between airborne assets and a range greater than 100 kilometers (62 miles) between an airborne asset (at 60,000 feet) and the ground.”

According to data from leading market research firm, Leichtman Research Group (LRG), 52% percent of U.S. households subscribing to a multi-channel video service now have a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) http://www.leichtmanresearch.com/press/113012release.html. But among telcoTV households, the percentage is even higher, with 71% subscribing to a DVR.

Leading market research firm ABI reports the global market for home automation systems exhibited strong growth in 2012 despite slow economic and housing market growth. The action also happens to be in North America, thanks to a wave of new entrants and offerings.
